Lot Title:

1849 MOFFAT. PCGS AU-53.
|
Description:
|
Moffat & Co. was one of the early private mints to issue gold coin on par with Federal specifications, maintaining a level of respectability that was shrugged off by later competitors, who themselves were put out of business when shady standards were exposed by investigators. So confident were they in the correct fineness and content of their gold that they guaranteed to redeem their product in silver coin.
A liberal supply of chartreuse-yellow mint luster exudes from either side of the present piece, confirming the AU-53 grade certified by PCGS. Close examination of the surfaces is an education in itself as the die rust and rather amateurish quality of the engraving contrasts sharply with the professional and superb quality of Federally minted coins and teach much about the caliber of talent required to produce world-class dies for striking coins. Note the crude structure of the lettering, the pebbly surfaces quality, and the numerous die cracks and other erosion problems prevalent across both sides. The Moffat dies were probably engraved on metal of a quality well-below that of the United State Mint, resulting in dies that deteriorated rapidly. A fascinating piece for study, and a fantastic coin for the collector of privately issued gold coins.
