Lot Title:

1854 KELLOGG. ANACS AU-53 Details, Cleaned.
Description:
The charming and almost cartoonish engraving of the dies is a large part of the appeal to collecting privately issued gold coins. In the case of the Kellogg double eagle, the devices are obviously intended to imitate the designs on Federal gold double eagles, but finer details are not to be found, and the hair curls are generic in appearance, as if drawn by a child. In addition to the cost savings, this adherence to simplified detail had the added benefit of long lasting dies that had little detail to lose over time, and thus, most examples appear sharp for what detail there was to be struck. Our example presents the usual strong appearance, though glossy surfaces are indicative of a moderate cleaning that has removed most of the remaining luster. The unnaturally reflective obverse is more thoroughly cleaned than the reverse, though apparently neither side escaped the jeweler’s cloth. An historic coin.
