Lot Title:
1880 $1 Goloid Metric Dollar, J-1651, P-1851, Low R-7. NGC PF-65.
Description:
This pattern is mainly like its 1879 Goloid Metric Dollar counterpart. It is supposedly composed of an alloy of 5.46% gold, 84.54% silver, and 10.00% copper, as opposed to a standard silver composition of 90.00% silver and 10.00% copper. Only a specific gravity test or an elemental analysis can verify the true composition. This handsome issue was designed by William Barber and represents the denomination in two different ways. This feature is noted on only a few such examples in the U. S. pattern series. This particular example displays magnificent crimson hues that blend with a dynamic turquoise blue. A slight planchet roughness is perceived beneath Liberty's chin as well as behind her head, perhaps a result of some rust on the obverse die. Also, some faint die polish lines are observed in the central portion of its reverse. Its superb definition contributes to its desirability. The NGC Census shows a population status as follows: 3 - Proof-64, 1 - Proof-65, 1 - Proof-66.
