Lot Title:
(1831-34) BECHTLER, K-1, R-4. PCGS AU-50.
Description:
This North Carolina specimen represents the earliest gold dollar type to be struck in the United States. It is specified as Breen 7744. Although it is undated, it was made between the Winter of 1831/2 through July 1834 from dies cut and punched by Christopher Bechtler. As is typically encountered, this example was struck off-center, and segments of the finely serrated borders are incomplete. A few surface marks are perceived, but they are not visually obtrusive. Its inscriptions are for the most part crisp and distinct, with a slight weakness observed on the "G" indicating the term Grains. An ample amount of its original luster is retained on its copper-gold aspect.
