C Bechtler Gold $1 (Kagin-1), 30 grain. PCGS AU-53.
Description:
Eunice Peters Estate. We believe PCGS mistakenly positioned the coin with the (presumed) reverse facing the viewer from the front of the slab. Off the market for a considerable period of time, this Kagin-1 features a distinctively toned denomination side, with 85% of that side draped in deeper brass-gold toning toward the right. A mere sliver of oak-blond color splashes the left edge, and this side possesses refreshingly unabraded quality. The other side interrupts predominantly dusky brassy-gold toning with a splash of similar blonde surrounding "30" and the star, and closer observation shows vague, light scratches, including two that intersect near the center. The purpose is not to diminish the appeal of this historic dollar in any fashion, as there is no doubt about the overall quality, but rather to present a pedigree marker that may help identify the coin in the future. (PCGS# 010064)
