Lot Title:

1796 LIHERTY, Reverse of 1795 (S-104, R.3) VF details/as described.
|
Description:
|
Fully 30 points of detail remain (by commercial grading standards), placing this example from a scarcer die-marriage toward the upper end of the grading spectrum with respect to sharpness. Of course, the LIHERTY obverse is called out in the Red Book as a separate variety, which has greatly influenced its popularity over the decades and helps ensure that even a moderately corroded example like this will find an esteemed place in an enthusiast's collection. The reverse appears to pass as fully problem-free, and even features some faint traces of flowline luster within the outer peripheral lettering. Some reddish color on the highpoints of the obverse seem to be a touch smoother than the surrounding walnut areas, suggesting this side has been carefully and judiciously burnished just enough to restore a bit of smoothness to this side. (PCGS# 001401)
This lot may contain an item not certified by ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. While Scotsman Auction Co. is typically conservative in our descriptions of items not certified by one of these companies, we cannot guarantee our grading estimation will match their grade. We highly recommend that collectors seeking items certified by a third-party grading service only bid on items that have already been certified. No lot can be returned because of a variance in judgment with regards to grade.

Sheldon-108. Type collectors consider the Draped Bust type cent of 1796 a bit more available than the Liberty Cap, but for sure, neither is easy to find "nice", and most examples are either dark,... |
