Lot Title:
1796 (S-108, R.4). ANACS VG-8.
Description:
Sheldon-108. Type collectors consider the Draped Bust type cent of 1796 a bit more available than the Liberty Cap, but for sure, neither is easy to find "nice", and most examples are either dark, corroded, or ugly. Here is a draped bust "reverse of 1794" representative that is reasonably appealing to the eye, but the smoothness seen overall, and particularly on the elevated devices, has been enhanced by careful, prudent burnishing of the surfaces. The fields were left alone and still retain dark, original roughness, but the details are a bit lighter by contrast, with deep bronze-red undertone. A pair of minor pits on the far left are the only noticeable distractions, and sharpness is close to the VG-8 given by ANACS, with ONE CENT weak on the reverse. (PCGS# 001401)

Although the reverse is lightly layered with even corrosion residue, the obverse is surprisingly free from such environmental effects, and overall color is actually highly acceptable for an issue that... |
