Lot Title:
1879 silver dollar pattern, J-1617. PCGS PF-62.
Description:
Certainly an apropos select in our auction for The Silver Dollar Show, the 1879 Judd-1617 represents an attempt by the mint to establish a so-called "metric dollar". Inscriptions on the reverse spell out the content in several ways, culminating in the all-American "one dollar" phraseology at bottom. This example displays chalky aluminum-grey patina but suffers none of the planchet flaws and alloy problems sometimes seen for the issue. Despite the PCGS PF-62 grade assessment, the surfaces still display a decent level of reflectivity and no individually distracting hairlines. (PCGS# 061995)
