Lot Title:

1879 Goloid dollar (J-1617). PCGS Genuine Proof (AU Details/cleaned/code 92).
Description:
The obverse mimics the regular Morgan dollar to some degree, while the reverse design ambitiously crowds a table of silver content equivalents into an elaborately wreathed presentation. William Wheeler Hubbell filed for patent of the "goloid" composition on April 14, 1876, the special alloy specifying 1 part gold, 24 parts silver, and 2.5 parts copper by weight. The resulting metal has an aluminum-white appearance, but is visually indistinguishable from any coin struck in silver, making it undesirable as an easily copied alloy for spurious counterfeits. This example displays moderate hairlines in all the fields, both obverse and reverse, and appears to be lightly handled, suggesting the PF-58 grade level. (PCGS# 061995)
