Lot Title:
1879 $1 Metric Dollar (J-1617, P-1813, R.4). NGC PF-62.
Description:
www.USpatterns.com indicates that the Judd-1617 metric dollar was sold in sets along with Judd-1626 and Judd-1635 -- the gold stella -- to congressmen for $6.10, and later to collectors to $15. Is this an indication that political machinations haven't changed much in 130 years, as congressmen get certain privileges not granted normal citizens? The question rings with rhetorical curiosity, if not numismatic wisdom. The grade of PF-62 is technically accurate but may slightly understate the aesthetic appeal of this lead-grey example. Electric lavender patina dominates the reverse, yielding to iridescent metallic-rainbow accents in central areas.
