Lot Title:
1880 Metric dollar (J-1646). PCGS PF-65RB.
Description:
A sensational pattern "metric dollar" with formidable eye-appeal, the value begins with esteemed technical qualifications of nearly full mint color, gorgeous brick-red field reflectivity, and extraordinary sharpness. Liberty's portrait mimics that seen on the 1877 half-union pattern and is softly rendered here with exquisite matte texture, while the design motifs on the reverse exhibit a little less of that same fragile texture. Thus, there appears to be nice cameo contrast on the obverse. Rarity for Judd-1646 has been lowered to R.6 in recent years, which still indicates that it is a rare coin, made immensely desirable at this, the "gem" level. (PCGS# 072031)
