1839 J-104 RESTRIKE. PCGS PF-62.
Description:
Die Alignment IV. Flipping the slab over per the usual 180 degree habit instantly reveals that the coin is struck in medal turn -- just as one expects of Judd-104. Furthermore, Gobrecht's name does not appear on the base of the rock, which helps to confirm the correct attribution, as PCGS shows "J-104 RES" on the slab. To be more precise, Liberty's head is in exact opposition to "OF" on the reverse. A reeded edge is apparent despite encapsulation. Details seem to be about as fully struck as is possible for a Gobrecht dollar. All three straps show readily at Liberty's sandal, and all three fingers show fully rounded shape and definition on her left (observed) hand. Turning to the reverse, without exception, every last one of the feathers in the eagle's extensively displayed plumage has a fully upraised outline, and his eye displays a completely rounded pupil. This is in short an incredibly well struck silver dollar. Vanilla-grey patina, slightly cloudy and opaque, bathes the entire coin without fail, yet still permits rapid appreciation of underlying reflectivity. One cannot discern much cameo contrast on either side, but the rims and edge denticulation favor a tight, matte texture not seen anywhere else on the coin. Without question, the grade stems from fairly extensive hairlines through the surfaces, but this only minimally detracts from the marvelous proof presentation. (PCGS# 011446)

Moderately thin olive-beige patina is distributed consistently and equally across the entire surface, allowing both sides to match up perfectly with each other. This could be dismissed as a trivial... |
