Lot Title:
Five-coin Hawaii type set, circulated.
Description:
Hands-down, this single lot brings with it the most personal history of any other in today's sale. The consignor, himself an older gentleman, states that his mother purchased this group from her coin club... on April 12, 1948 for eleven dollars!! She documented this fact on the home-made holder, which encloses a five coin Hawaiian type set. The coins have been lovingly preserved. Fortunately, wide foresight led to selection of inert material into which the coins have been stapled (the staples themselves show considerable age), and included within the protective housing are type written notes in black and red ink. It amounts to rudimentary certification of the set, which includes a dollar (VF), half-dollar (AU), quarter (XF), dime (XF) and cent (XF/light corrosion). Interestingly, the grading seems highly inconsistent, which only makes this item that much more charming. For example, the half-dollar with most of its remaining luster states "VF", while the quarter at XF states "A UNC".
This lot may contain an item not certified by ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. While Scotsman Auction Co. is typically conservative in our descriptions of items not certified by one of these companies, we cannot guarantee our grading estimation will match their grade. We highly recommend that collectors seeking items certified by a third-party grading service only bid on items that have already been certified. No lot can be returned because of a variance in judgment with regards to grade.
