Lot Title:
1883 Hawaii half-dollar, PCGS MS-62.
Description:
Mintage: 87,755, but the half-dollar denomination suffered a far higher attrition rate than the other silver Hawaiian issues. One just does not encounter this coin in high grade often enough to establish a good frame of reference, so the prooflike appearance of this almost-choice example can seem a bit disconcerting at first blush. After all, wouldn't a proof look just about like this? Granted, a couple of linear scrapes on the portrait require consideration in the grade, but this is a great coin, considerably better than the usual well-worn examples found on the market.
