1907 High Relief Wire Rim. PCGS MS-64. 1907 High Relief Wire Rim. PCGS MS-64.
Lot Title: 1907 High Relief Wire Rim. PCGS MS-64.
Description: The majority of bona fide numismatists, as well as casual collectors of United States coinage, regard this denomination's design the most artistic to be employed for a regular issue. The model Saint-Gaudens employed for the obverse's motif was the allegorical figure of Victory, seen in the foreground of The Sherman Monument at the Grand Army Plaza in Central Park, New York City. This memorial was dedicated in 1903. The Flying Eagle motif was a perennial favorite, since it was first utilized by Christian Gobrecht for the dollars that bear his name. These initial pieces had the date indicated in Roman numerals. The impressive high relief of these pieces was an exceedingly arduous undertaking. The dies had to bear extreme pressure from the multiple blows necessary to achieve the desired result, which resembled more of a medal than a coin. A little more than 12,000 knife-rim business strikes were produced before the modified lower relief design was executed. This peculiar feature was the outcome of metal protruding into the space between the dies and the collar. A splendid golden glow radiates from its silky smooth surfaces having a mattelike aspect. A meandering crack is observed from the tip of the outermost feather of the Eagle's right wing to the rim, and another is noticed from the tail down to and across the sun. These were probably the effects of the successive strokes by the press on each issue, resulting in die fatigue. PCGS population: 969; 3,787 total; 351 finer. This lot presents a splendid opportunity to acquire the pinnacle of United States coinage workmanship.
