1907 High Relief Wire Rim. MS-60. 1907 High Relief Wire Rim. MS-60.
Lot Title: 1907 High Relief Wire Rim. MS-60.
Description: The "wire rim" that appeared on the first run of 1907 double-eagles was unintentionally extruded from the planchet due to excessive metal flow between the striking dies and the collar during production. Mint officials of the time considered it an undesirable effect, no doubt because the inconsistent edge would prevent stacking of the coins, and they took steps to eliminate the "problem" by slightly reducing the planchet size, producing the later "flat rim" coins. Collectors today find the "wire rim" effect charming -- an adornment of Saint-Gaudens' the timeless design. The coin offered in this lot is of the former sub-type, with a tall rim circumscribing 60% of the obverse. The balance of the obverse and most of the reverse display slight raising of the rim as well. An old ANACS colored photo-cert accompanies this lot, and proclaims a grade of MS-62/62, but your cataloger suggests that a shift in grading standards probably disqualifies this coin from that grade today. It has been very lightly wiped, and the delicate wire rim shows signs of minor mishandling. A grade of MS-60 seems more appropriate.

This lot may contain an item not certified by ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. While Scotsman Auction Co. is typically conservative in our descriptions of items not certified by one of these companies, we cannot guarantee our grading estimation will match their grade. We highly recommend that collectors seeking items certified by a third-party grading service only bid on items that have already been certified. No lot can be returned because of a variance in judgment with regards to grade.
