Lot Title:

1798 Double Struck dollar. NGC VF details/cleaned.
Description:
Roman Powers Collection. Double-struck dollars are not unheard-of, but this one shows an unusually nice dual impression, with very neat rotation of about one degree between strikes. This has the effect of diminishing the obverse stars so as to look almost like tiny asterisks, while focusing on Liberty's motif will set off optical illusions and double-vision all over the place. Bifocals anyone? Signs of cleaning on the obverse cannot be ignored, though the reverse does not appear particularly abused. Mostly pewter-grey overall, some old dirt embedded into the details actually serves to emphasize the nearly bizarre effect of the multiple strikes. (PCGS# 006868)
