Lot Title: 1795 13 Leaves. PCGS Genuine (code 94, as described).
Description: PCGS code-94 (apparent AU-55). PCGS has recently seemed to become quite fond of the "altered surfaces" disclaimer to exempt itself from grading certain coins, but what is frustrating is that in so many cases, whatever alteration has allegedly occurred is not explicitly spelled out. The 1795 gold eagle in question presents surfaces that appear to have been improperly cleaned, due mostly to pale straw-gold color, but any alteration that might go beyond that is not readily apparent at all. Of course, we are at the substantial disadvantage of viewing the coin "through the plastic", yet a strong loupe reveals naught but a faint impression that underlying gloss was caused by cleaning. The term "altered surfaces" often seems to have a more nefarious connotation than "cleaned", but the latter term appears ample in this case. Despite the unknown process which has taken place, Liberty's portrait nonetheless manages to present different texture than the surrounding fields, as if the coin had been somewhat prooflike at some point. Putting strong magnification on the protected areas between the stars reveals glinting golden luster, as do limited areas around the devices on the reverse. Likewise, this examination allows for full appreciation of very strong definition over the entire coin. Strands of hair separate into distinct threads cascading over Liberty's ear, and the eagle's wings offer minute details. Strangely enough, and again, flying in the face of the PCGS disclaimer, a few particles of die grease dot the obverse here and there, when one might have expected them to disappear under the auspices of any sort of surface alteration.
