Lot Title:
1800 NGC AU-50.
Description:
A single pair of dies struck all 1800 gold eagles, which explains why it is such an infrequently seen issue. The obverse die broke early, and mintage ended one coin shy of an even 6,000. Time has proven unkind to these coins, with a very small portion surviving until today, and they are difficult to locate in a problem-free holder. Here is an example that provides that large majority of original sharpness, with Liberty's portrait particularly bold and well defined. Her hair strands are complete and each star has decent details, lacking only central intricacy. Patchy medium-gold toning dashes over pale surfaces, and offers a hint of glittering luster here and there. The reverse shows a number of adjustment marks, but the obverse shows no distractions at all. (PCGS# 008563)

It is not very often you see a piece of early holdered gold and think it might be undergraded, but this could be an AU-58. The strike, color, and luster are all way above average. The tiny wisp of... |
