Lot Title:

1795 13 Leaves. NGC AU details/improperly cleaned.
Description:
Formidable demand for the 1795 gold eagle as a type coin equates to a wide audience for any reasonably good looking example, even one that may exhibit problems that prevent a straight grade at certification. NGC states "improperly cleaned" for the present coin, but that statement may be made of just about every 1795 in existence, as the coins have long been the target of collectors and dealers intent on "making them look as new as they can look". Regardless, the surfaces here have not been aggressively hairlined, and for that matter, some of the original mint frost has managed to survive within the shelter of recessed areas, especially around the stars. Close inspection suggests that the coin is reflective in part due to the cleaning, although the passage of time has reduced excessive brightness that would be utterly out of character for a coin this old. Both sides show a profuse collection of extremely small contact marks, a characteristic often seen for lightly circulated examples of large gold coins of the era. Prior to being struck, the rim at upper left was thinned due to strong adjustment marks in the area, leading to indistinct finer details. Details are very sharp, with wear patterns consistent with AU-53 to AU-55 details. (PCGS# 008551)
