Lot Title:

1841-D Small D PCGS Genuine (code 92/XF details/cleaned).
|
Description:
|
Large die cracks quadrisect the obverse, and suggest impending die failure. That PCGS invoked Code-92 (cleaning) will surprise most bidders, as the coin looks really original at first glance, especially for a Dahlonega piece. Many of these have been polished and drastically cleaned, so it certainly is a pleasure to view original dirt and carrot-gold toning still stuck into the nooks and crannies of this half-eagle. PCGS isn't crazy, as the coin does show a few glossy hairlines, but at some point, it becomes a matter of relative opinion. This XF example, is MUCH nicer than many of the "worse" coins that have somehow have gotten into a slab. Without doubt, it will be cracked out faster than the "SOLD" hammer can whack the podium. The "small D" commands no premium as a variety, being the more common of two die marriages for 1841-D, but the total mintage of 29,392 assures scarcity as a date in the series. XF-45 is an excellent... |

This lot offers a popular low mintage (29,392) Dahlonega Branch Mint issue. The coppery aspect that enriches its surfaces is due to the high concentrate of copper in the alloy's mixture. A... |
