Lot Title:
1842-D Small Date. PCGS XF-45.
Description:
The "small date" obverse is more common than the "large date", but as a type coin, one can never consider a handsome, attractive and original 1842-D half-eagle "common". This example displays the perfect look for circulated Dahlonega gold, including delicate bronzing of the peripheral areas, and a judicious quantity of 1840s dirt still worked into the devices. Marvelous! There is no luster, as usual for the XF-45 grade range of the type and mint, and sporadic hairlines sweeping upward toward the left appear to be merely incidental, not indicative of any foul play. A harmless old scratch beneath the chin and another below the eagle's left (observed) wing have carefully toned along with the rest of the coin, leaving no distraction. (PCGS# 008210)
