Lot Title:
1842-D Small Date. PCGS VF-25.
Description:
Olive-gold patina decorates the fields in a thin ring just inside the circumference of each rim, providing an unorthodox framed appearance for the dominant motifs. While normal circulation wear has flattened much of the original detail, some lack of detail on the obverse may also be due to strike, as the reverse appears nearly a half-grade higher. Both sides bear circulation marks typical of a mid-grade Dahlonega coin. Interesting in appearance, and a that should attract the attention of branch-mint gold connoisseurs.

The "small date" obverse is more common than the "large date", but as a type coin, one can never consider a handsome, attractive and original 1842-D half-eagle "common". This example displays the... |
