Lot Title:
1840 NGC AU-58.
Description:
While it is certain that luster sparkles nicely from the peripheral areas, fields are unexpectedly broadly abraded for this 1840 half-eagle. Those areas not so abraded provide consistent reflectivity, suggesting that this was a prooflike coin prior to the rudimentary storage mechanisms that nearly always seemed to result in abraded coins. 1840 was the year that both mints (Philadelphia and New Orleans) slightly reduced the size of the collar for half-eagles, and this appears to be an example of the smaller (and more common) diameter, though no attribution as such is noted on the slab insert.
