1846-C NGC AU details/improperly cleaned.
Description:
Incorrectly labeled "1864-C" by NGC. The consignor was duly surprised by the "cleaned" disclaimer accompanying this Civil War Charlotte gold piece, as the coin appears at first glance to display fully original surfaces. Indeed, a generous supply of original dirt crumbles up against the lettering and devices, and one cannot ask for more ideal olive-gold coloration. Only at a small number of viewing angles does a supply of wispy hairlines pop into view, and truth be told, they just do not distract much at all from the very pleasing overall exhibition. Please sell me every one of your branch-mint gold coins that have been "cleaned", yet remain this nice looking. A coin destined to be cracked out practically before the hammer sends the high bidder home! (PCGS# 007741)

Jackson's Branch Mint Gold, mintage: 4,808. The low mintage explains much of why Doug Winter calls the 1846-C fourth rarest of the Charlotte quarter-eagles, with AU and UNC survivors quite rare. NGC... |
