Lot Title:
1846-C NGC AU-50.
Description:
Jackson's Branch Mint Gold, mintage: 4,808. The low mintage explains much of why Doug Winter calls the 1846-C fourth rarest of the Charlotte quarter-eagles, with AU and UNC survivors quite rare. NGC reports 17 in AU-50, and only fourteen coins in all higher grades combined! Classic lemon-gold color emanates from the exceedingly thin patina seen for this example, and those areas of the field that abut higher relief details still retain some semi-prooflike reflectivity. Obverse sharpness seems comparable to that of an AU Philadelphia coin, while the reverse shows typically flatness over the highest areas of the design. Neither side shows any noticeable marks at all, which is a very important consideration when buying branch-mint gold. (PCGS# 007741)

Incorrectly labeled "1864-C" by NGC. The consignor was duly surprised by the "cleaned" disclaimer accompanying this Civil War Charlotte gold piece, as the coin appears at first glance to display... |

1846-C NCS AU Details OBV Tooled, Rim Filed.

This super tough Quarter Eagle has AU+ detail and no other distractions than the ones listed above. AU bid for this coin is $6,600, and it Trends for $10,000. Branch mint gold is getting harder and... |
