Lot Title:
1798 Small Eagle 13 Stars (B-1a). ANACS XF-45.
Description:
Contact marks do not enter into grade evaluation, as both sides are extremely well preserved from that standpoint, revealing basically no presence whatsoever at arm's-length. What good luck for the collector needing a distraction-free type coin! Mushroom-grey patina layers the entire coin except for the rim area above LIBERTY, where cyan and cinnamon accents offer a bit of chromatic deviation. Surfaces are a trifle antiseptic, as they reveal no dirt whatsoever, but that is par for the course for these big, old silver pieces. (PCGS# 006867)

False luster suggests that both sides have been whizzed, or "smoothed" per current PCGS vernacular. An XF coin should not show strong cartwheels, but that is precisely what can be seen while tilting... |

A little dull from an old cleaning (which is hardly shocking commentary for a bust dollar), but luckily, some original dirt residue embraces most of the devices, relieving some monotony of the... |

Trace luster and remarkably clean fields remain on this very elusive type. The dark pewter and lighter silver seen on the surface blend together brilliantly. |
