Lot Title:
1797 16 Stars (LM-2). ANACS XF-40 details/scratched.
Description:
The scratches on the obverse, while profuse, could be individually forgivable since none is necessarily excessively distracting (bearing in mind the usual difficulties for early half-dimes). However, there are many of them, and the reverse is unfortunately bisected by a long, deep scratch that is obvious even without a glass. On a positive note, obverse definition is unusually strong for the "EF details" grade, though the eagle's feathers are weak as always for the die-marriage. LM-2 features a small, then a large "7" in the date, and a berry just between "N" and "I" on the reverse. (PCGS# 004258)

Condemnation of an early silver piece, particularly one struck in the eighteenth century, is easy when it is very white and deprived of patina, but some events are beyond a collector's control, and a... |

The sixteen-star obverse provides immediate attribution of LM-3, second scarcest die-marriage for 1797. Sometimes, it seems that early half-dimes just can't win. It is as if the coins were either... |

This is a beautiful natural gray beauty. The strike is full with sharp stars and good interior wing detail. Struck from clashed dies and free of man made impairments, this could be the perfect type... |
