1797 16 Stars (LM-3, R-5). NCS Genuine (VF details/planchet flaw).
|
Description:
|
The sixteen-star obverse provides immediate attribution of LM-3, second scarcest die-marriage for 1797. Sometimes, it seems that early half-dimes just can't win. It is as if the coins were either mangled during circulation in some manner, or they left the mint with problems already in place. The latter scenario is the case here, as the early mint allowed this half-dime to leave the building with a gaping planchet flaw at 7:00 of the obverse (and 10:00 of the reverse). Presumably, not enough metal was absent to bring the weight below tolerance, or perhaps this started out as a lamination, and the missing portion separated some time during use. At any rate, on balance, this is a nicer VF coin with reasonably attractive original surface quality and no major post mint damage, the exception being a minor scrape of the obverse rim at 10:00. There is as certain charm associated with coins like this, that humbly display the pitfalls and shortcomings of early mint operation, though not every collector can appreciate the added character of such flaws.

The scratches on the obverse, while profuse, could be individually forgivable since none is necessarily excessively distracting (bearing in mind the usual difficulties for early half-dimes). However,... |

Condemnation of an early silver piece, particularly one struck in the eighteenth century, is easy when it is very white and deprived of patina, but some events are beyond a collector's control, and a... |

This is a beautiful natural gray beauty. The strike is full with sharp stars and good interior wing detail. Struck from clashed dies and free of man made impairments, this could be the perfect type... |
