(About The Images)
1836 J-60. PCGS PF-55. 1836 J-60. PCGS PF-55.
Lot Title: 1836 J-60. PCGS PF-55.
Description: This specimen is an example of Judd-60 Original, Pollock-65, R-1, with C. GOBRECHT. F. on the base. The observed Die Alignment IV (Medal Turn) depicts the Eagle flying level with regard to the obverse's horizontal axis. It is struck in Silver with a Plain Edge. With tremendous amounts of silver dollars struck between the years 1794 and 1803 having been exported to Europe due to their higher weight than their Spanish equivalent, it was decided to suspend production of this denomination beginning in 1804. After this suspension was lifted in 1831, production resumed in 1836. The dies utilized for the resurgence of this denomination were engraved by Christian Gobrecht from designs developed by Thomas Sully and Titian Peale. The example presented here is believed to be part of the 600 coined on March 31st, 1837 that utilized the 1836 dies in a "medal" orientation die alignment. These pieces were then delivered to the Bank of the United States, and subsequently, many were placed in the channels of commerce. No doubt, this seems to be consistent with regard to the high percentage observed having circulation marks. Its surfaces reflect an heirloom gray quality enriched with an enchanting rose blush. Some random marks from its brief circulation encounters are noted along with very moderate wear. Handsome in appearance, it will be a prized addition for either the Pattern or the Seated Liberty Dollar connoisseur.
