(About The Images)
1836 J-60. NGC PF-61. 1836 J-60. NGC PF-61.
Lot Title: 1836 J-60. NGC PF-61.
Description: This is a superior looking coin for the grade assigned. The story of the Gobretcht Dollars are well known, and this coin was part of the original minting. This is an unusual striking, it is a Die Alignment I coin, which should have the Eagle flying horizontally. This coin was struck with a 45 degree rotation so the Eagle appears to be getting some air under his wings and is gaining altitude. This coin is fully struck as you would expect from a Proof striking, but set against the deeply mirrored fields, this dollar shows more fine detail than is customary. The fields show a number of very fine lines probably from storage in a cloth lined tray. According to Breen, who numbered this coin a 5414, this is an early impression verified by the fine die line coming off the central wing area and pointing towards the "AT" in "States." The repunching on the "8" and "3" in the date shows quite clearly. The surfaces of this coin are a neutral silver color with just a little color about the peripheries. This dream coin will be a highlight in even the most advanced collection.
