Lot Title:
1841 Original (Breen - 1). NGC PF-65 BN.
Description:
Large berries on the reverse attribute only as B-1, and die-state III is based on the die-crack that plainly connects stars 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7. Breen seemed to believe that about twenty-five original strikes exist, with half that many restrikes (small berries reverse). A rather amazing proof, the devices cameo faintly against the fields, which in turn retain surprising reflectivity in spite of mahogany patina. Gentle mulberry-blue iridescence layers beautifully over Liberty's portrait and enhances the tactile contrast, while the fields exude exceptionally attractive burgundy-violet tone. A spectacular interplay of these various toning elements occurs as the obverse is tilted under a light. The reverse is more commonly toned in mahogany-brown, although here again, at a very narrow viewing angle, spectacular violet hue jumps into view, enhancing primarily the peripheral area. While obviously well struck, preservation has been kind, as there are no serious defects. However, it should be noted that single short hair stubble was encapsulated on each side, and can be a highly aggravating distraction in light of such an historic and wonderful numismatic masterpiece.
