Lot Title:

1840 Restrike (B-1c, Breen-1581, second restrike). NGC PF-61 BN.
Description:
Small berries are seen on the reverse, but the "T" in CENT is not doubled and there are file marks between RICA and the rim, leading to B-1c, or the "second restrike" for 1840. Leeway can and must be given rare coins when it comes time for a third-party grading service to decide whether it is worthy of encapsulation. If an estimated population of fifteen or less qualifies as "rare", then certainly this coin should be granted every opportunity at encapsulation! The pinkish copper color is suspect, and the curious toning pattern suggests an improper chemical rinse, yet the surfaces have not been damaged so as to defy NGC's willingness to certify such a rare copper. Interestingly, the "brown" designation has been provided even though each side is about 80% red, so clearly the graders knew something was potentiallly amiss. Considerable die-polish on the reverse fails to lessen a high degree of reflectivity on that side, while the obverse is only modestly reflective, yet Liberty's portrait is very obviously layered in very fine matte texture, providing noticeable cameo contrast. Neither side displays meaningful abrasions, but a number of wispy hairlines occasionally crisscross in the obverse fields.
