(About The Images)
1835 (C-2, R.1) PCGS MS-64 RD. 1835 (C-2, R.1) PCGS MS-64 RD.
Lot Title: 1835 (C-2, R.1) PCGS MS-64 RD.
Description: "ST" in STATES are punched close together for C-2 (and properly spaced for C-1). A die crack above ERICA extends into the field below the wreath, and this is seen only on the last few proofs struck, and the earliest business strikes. Interestingly, the reverse shows a die crack from the border to the wreath between "D S", and Breen thought this a characteristic of later dies, so there seems to be confusion in attributing the correct die state for this coin. One could guess an earlier die-state, becaue freshness of the dies would explain the marvelous sharpness seen on both sides.

PCGS has indicated a grade of MS-64 RD on the rattler holder, and that the color is magnificent and blazing with fresh mint bloom is evidence from the very first glance. Freshly struck mint-red has mellowed only a little in 180 years, although portions of the wreath display some brown patina on high relief areas. Certainly, original red copper is a joy to behold, but one disadvantage of coins that have never been allowed to develop patina is that they are prone to spots. In this case, the far left rim displays three spots of graduating size, and another rests below "BE" on the headband. Fortunately, these are too small to really detract much from the allure of a fully red middle-date half-cent.

1835 C-1, R-1 PCGS MS-64 Brown.
Extremely clean surfaces for the grade on this lovely milk-chocolate brown example. A minor mark on Liberty's chin appears to be the sole reason an MS-65 grade wasn't awarded.
