Lot Title: 1841 Original (B-1, R.5). NGC PF-65 BN.
Description: B.B. Consignment. Large berries on the reverse identify an original striking for B-1, with die-state III ascertained by the advanced die-crack boldly connecting the third through seventh stars. Sources state rarity estimates between R.5 and R.6, and Breen seemed to believe that about twenty-five original strikes exist, half of those restrikes with small berries on the reverse. Based on a lack of auction appearances in recent years, R.6 would not be surprising as a true estimate of scarcity, making this a very rare coin. For that matter, any half-cent should be considered rare and desirable in proof format.

Amazing for an early copper proof, the devices for this 1841 cameo faintly against the fields, which in turn retain surprising reflectivity in spite of considerable, wooden violet-mahogany patina. Mulberry-blue iridescence layers beautifully over Liberty's portrait and enhances the tactile contrast, with saturated color flashing into view when the coin is tilted to best lighting advantage. The spectacular interplay of the various toning components must be appreciated during active viewing and cannot be well captured in a static image. The reverse is more commonly toned in mahogany-brown, although here again, at a very narrow viewing angle, spectacular violet-burgundy hue explodes into view, enhancing primarily the peripheral area. While obviously struck with exceptional precision from early mint apparatus, preservation has also been kind, as there are no serious defects. However, it should be noted that single short hair stubble was encapsulated on each side, and can be a highly aggravating distraction in light of such an historic and wonderful numismatic masterpiece.
