Lot Title:
1797 Plain Edge (C-2, R.3). NGC XF-45 BN.
Description:
The portrait is fairly well centered and the date and borders wide, while the reverse displays the widest configuration of HALF. No evidence of an under type, and NGC states "plain edge", leading to C-2 and die-state IV, with the die-crack complete on the reverse. Surfaces display a dull, matte finish and have been recolored, the evidence of this most apparent on the obverse, but the work was performed with skill and desire to make as convincing a job as possible. Without original surfaces, it's impossible to tell the full story of preservation, but there are no major marks, with a light punch between "ER" and several random circulation marks on the portrait of small consequence. As is often true of C-2, sharpness is outstanding, with the dentils particularly well defined, and Liberty's tresses display a lot of handsome relief. Here, the skill of whomever recolored the coin really shows, since her locks are of lighter complexion than the mahogany-brown fields, and the contrast aids perceived sharpness.

Low head on the obverse, and a triple leaf at AME, plus NGC states "plain edge" giving C-3a as attribution. Die state III with the chip on the chin, but no die-crack to the right rim. Absolutely... |

1797 Low Head, Plain Edge (C-3a, R.3). PCGS VF-25 BN.
The portrait is low and ME stands over a triplet for C-3a. A glossy example, the surfaces have been carefully smoothed to lessen the offenses of even microporosity, with color nicely restored and... |
