1797 Plain Edge (C-3a, R.3). NGC VG-8 BN.
|
Description:
|
Low head on the obverse, and a triple leaf at AME, plus NGC states "plain edge" giving C-3a as attribution. Die state III with the chip on the chin, but no die-crack to the right rim. Absolutely terrific for the NGC VG-8 grade, fields are wonderfully smooth and dark-chocolate, with superb contrast from the hazelnut-brown portrait -- simply the nicest look possible for these humble coppers. Less contrast is offered on the reverse, and less detail at the peripheral areas as well, where TED STATES OF is starting to merge with the rim. What appears to be a dull old scratch penetrates the top of MERI, and another slices downward just right of the fraction, both of these well toned like the rest of the coin. Others seen are on the obverse, one curving right and upward from the date, and it is unclear whether these might actually have been strikethroughs, or defects present on the planchet prior to striking. Witness how the one next to the fraction somehow "skips" the intervening stem, and it's easy to imagine that as a pre-struck defect. Truly a fantastic coin for the grade, and likely EAC 8.

Centered portrait and wide HALF give C-2, with no under type, a plain edge and die-state IV. Struck a touch off-center left, especially as compared to an NGC XF-45 in today's sale, with evidence in... |

1797 Plain Edge (C-2, R.3). NGC XF-45 BN.

The portrait is fairly well centered and the date and borders wide, while the reverse displays the widest configuration of HALF. No evidence of an under type, and NGC states "plain edge", leading to... |

1797 Low Head, Plain Edge (C-3a, R.3). PCGS VF-25 BN.
|
The portrait is low and ME stands over a triplet for C-3a. A glossy example, the surfaces have been carefully smoothed to lessen the offenses of even microporosity, with color nicely restored and... |
