(About The Images)
1923-S PCGS MS-64. 1923-S PCGS MS-64.
Lot Title: 1923-S PCGS MS-64.
Description: 1923-S is a preeminent date in the Standing Liberty quarter series, due in no small part to a limited mintage of 1,360,000 pieces. The issue has perhaps a somewhat undue reputation as a strike-challenged date, most likely because so many circulated examples lost their dates quickly, or display decent detail overall, but nearly unreadable digits. As it turns out, 1923-S seems to have suffered no more striking problems than many other SLQ issues, and there is a substantial population certified with the "full head" designation. This is mentioned not because this particular MS-64 example is a candidate for such designation, but rather because it is actually a rather sharp coin that probably has 90% of the head details showing, as well as decent sharpness at the inner shield, although the top of each digit in the date is somewhat soft. Astute collectors know it is wise to avoid "scoop head" coins, and to look instead for sharper pieces that avoid the high premium for a full-head designation.

Light patina graces the fields and spills over atop the devices in some areas, but nowhere is the coloration heavy or unattractive. In fact, the underlying luster is strong and has no problem energizing the eye appeal. Scarcely any abrasions require mention (for one thing, because there are so few), with a very brief scratch across Liberty's left (observed) thigh and three reed marks clustered over "Q" on the reverse being the most prominent. Pay a premium for a "full head" designation if you really want to, or be satisfied with a coin that has practically the same level of detail at a much nicer price, and housed in a PCGS rattler to boot.
