(About The Images)
1923-S NGC MS-65. 1923-S NGC MS-65.
Lot Title: 1923-S NGC MS-65.
Description: Riveting white luster shines with unlimited potential, lending brilliant illumination to the sharply defined devices. In fact, there are strong indications that this particular coin is struck much better than many competing examples, since the shield displays most of the rivets, lacking the usual two at lower left, and the head and torso are sharp. Unfortunately, two thin contact marks happened to gravitate to Liberty's head, denying all possibility of an "FH" designation. 1923-S is certainly a key to the series, given the mintage of under 1.4 million, but it is probably less of a "strike rarity" than advertised when it comes to "full head" coins versus "non full head". In truth, it isn't that difficult to locate nicely struck examples like this one that lack the designation, yet provide the vast majority of the exact same detail available to coins that cost twice as much.

1923-S NGC VF-30.
Surprisingly ample luster can still be noticed under strong illumination, and in years past, this key quarter might have had claims to extremely-fine consideration. On the reverse, an intriguing...
547The Collectors' Auction 2012 on 10/05/2012$1,250.00
1923-S PCGS XF-45.
Aside from 1916 and the overdate, 1923-S is the key to a complete Standing Liberty quarter series within upper middle grades. (Only in AU does 1927-S overtake key status.) Significant luster accents...
554The Midwest Summer Sale 2012 on 07/27/2012$1,050.00
1923-S PCGS VF-30 (green label).
1923-S is notorious for weak strikes, which helps explain the strong demand for nicer coins, and one can easily see this VF-30 example as a superior piece Despite an assigned grade in a mid-level...
555The Midwest Summer Sale 2012 on 07/27/2012$1,600.00
1923-S NGC AU-50.
Discernible cartwheel luster revolves carefully through the mushroom-tan fields surrounding Liberty's portrait, which itself features pale grey accents. 1923-S has a reputation for weak strikes,...
425The Collectors' Auction 2010 on 10/15/2010$3,500.00
1923-S PCGS MS-64.
1923-S is a preeminent date in the Standing Liberty quarter series, due in no small part to a limited mintage of 1,360,000 pieces. The issue has perhaps a somewhat undue reputation as a...

1923-S MS-66 FH Scratched.
This coin is blazing white, full of luster, and shows a 90% Full Head. However, a major grading service might be unwilling to encapsulate it because of a spot on the obverse and a hazy area to the...
