(About The Images)
1796 (JR-1, R.3) NGC XF-45 CAC. 1796 (JR-1, R.3) NGC XF-45 CAC.
Lot Title: 1796 (JR-1, R.3) NGC XF-45 CAC.
Description: sn: 3177232-007. JR-1 is familiar to early dime collectors as the most common 1796 die-marriage, instantly identifiable by the cud on the first star. Obviously, being the first year of the type, any example is desirable by collectors at all levels, and those certified command even stronger demand. NGC has assessed this example as grading XF-45, and the faintest traces of underlying brilliance still appear to be clinging to Liberty's portrait.

Further away from the outline of the various effigies on each side, a marbled pattern of tone merges strains of cola-tan color with lavender-grey hues, reminiscent of toning from a paper envelope. A pair of diagonal adjustment marks are almost subtle above Liberty's shoulder, and help relieve attention to the tiny scratches and contact marks associated with a lightly circulated coin.

1796 (JR-1) circulated/impaired.
Ex-Stack's, Rich Uhrich Collection, 2/26/2008: 1471. Slightly bent, which is the reason the obverse grades G+, and the reverse is unevenly worn to AG-3. Call the overall grade "good-minus", with...

1796 "JR-2, R.4," PCGS Genuine.
JR-2 is a better die marriage variety for 1796, though with an R.4 rarity, it is not impossible to find. However, not many could have survived to modern times with the level of detail offered by the...

1796 "JR-4, R.4" Small Eagle. PCGS Genuine.
Variegated toning is comprised of navy-blue, burnt-orange and golden undertones, overlaid by deep grey patina. PCGS has only called this coin "genuine" without certifying the grade, and your cataloger...
404The Collectors' Auction 2007 on 10/19/2007$5,250.00
1796 ANACS XF-45 Details, Altered Surfaces.
ANACS has supplied a disclaimer of “altered surfaces,” but to be specific, this coin has been whizzed in spots to smooth a few hairlines or handling marks. It was then cleverly recolored in tones...
1005The Collector's Auction on 10/20/2006$2,900.00
1796 VF-20+.
An impressive circulated example of a JR-6 specimen -- diagnostic by the distinctive obverse die breaks with the most obvious through 179 of the date. Possibly subjected to a light cleaning, but it...
