Lot Title:
1800 (JR-1, R.4) NGC AU-58.
Description:
In the big scheme of all things numismatic, lightly abraded surfaces have sustained essentially no important detrimental effect for this 1800 dime, since it is safe to assume that any silver coin of this vintage is bound to have seen its share of misdeed in two-hundred years. What matters now is that the patina has regained some composure, and hints of gold tone creeping over the rim is a distinct step in the positive direction. Turning to constructive qualities that enhance the coin's appeal, the strike is pleasantly sharp on both sides, with individual strands of hair distinct from one another, while the eagle proudly displays a full complement of feathers. Attribution of JR-1 is easy once separation of the beak and star beneath is noted. They are joined for JR-2, the only other die marriage known for 1800.

What seems to be a reasonably original appearance is unfortunately marred by the presence of graffiti right in the center of the obverse of this early bust dime. The letter “W” has been rather rudely... |
