Lot Title:
1801 (JR-1, R.4) PCGS VF-30.
Description:
R in LIBERTY was original punched too low into the obverse die, and its position subsequently corrected. Thus, JR-1 is readily identified by this recutting, and it is the more available of two die-marriages for 1801, a date that is difficult regardless of variety. Potential bidders are greeted with a surprising level of sharpness for this example, which is certified by PCGS as grading VF-30. Liberty's hair displays pleasing definition, with nearly complete separation between individual strands near the center of the portrait. On the reverse, only the third "U" is faint in the motto, and the profusion of raised pimples that provide evidence of die rust are readily apparent. This is not a strictly original coin, since virtually no early dime in existence is at this level of detail, but the appearance is self-assured and nicer than most. Each side displays generous patina, particularly on the reverse, which is bathed in beige-gold, while the obverse is eighty-percent covered in variations of olive-gold color. Perhaps most important of all, there are hardly an distractions at all on either side, with a single small, meaningless contusion noted left of the peak of Liberty's head.
