Lot Title:
1811 (S-287). ICG VF-20.
Description:
ICG's assigned VF-20 grade is certainly contentious on a couple of fronts. In the first place, sharpness seems a little short for that assessment, and in addition, several tiny pinpricks are scattered across the portrait, with "T" in CENT is partially scratched off. Fortunately, the color and surface texture are quite attractive overall, a point of frustration for most classic head cents, and 1811 examples in particularly are difficult to find with decent eye-appeal. [F-15] would probably make this coin look so much more appealing, but then again, it is always wise to heed the old adage: "buy the coin, not the holder".
This lot may contain an item not certified by ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. While Scotsman Auction Co. is typically conservative in our descriptions of items not certified by one of these companies, we cannot guarantee our grading estimation will match their grade. We highly recommend that collectors seeking items certified by a third-party grading service only bid on items that have already been certified. No lot can be returned because of a variance in judgment with regards to grade.

Copper collectors have come to grips with the fact that Classic head large-cents of 1811 are usually just plain ugly, as they seldom escape having corrosion on one side or the other (if not both!). ... |

This is a very nice example of a difficult design type. The copper used for the Classic Head series is softer than that used on earlier and later cents. This coin is preserved well with only one... |
