Lot Title:
1799 (S-189 d/s IV, R.4) PCGS VG-10.
Description:
Existence of three known die marriages for large-cents dated 1799 does not equate to a large population of coins to choose from, since one die marriage is non-collectible, and the others are always very difficult to locate even when it is a buyer's market. Examples are typically dark with surface issues, and it is practically impossible to find a 1799 large-cent with even passable eye-appeal. This one is housed in a PCGS holder and graded VG-10 Under magnification, roughness is still apparent in the fields, but Liberty's portrait and the wreath are not as coarsely textured as one might expect. Usually, one or the other of LIBERTY and 1799 is weak, but this coin was fairly well centered when struck on a better sized planchet, and both are readily legible, with just the tops of LIBE and the bottoms of the digits a trifle weak. In terms of absolute sharpness, up to 15 points of detail remain, with definition of the leaves on the reverse particularly pleasing for the grade. Defects are limited to the usual minor ticks from circulation, and most are now well hidden by the darker patina, except for a thin old scratch at the back of Liberty's neck, and another at the corner of her mouth.
