(About The Images)
1859-D MS-60 Details/cleaned. 1859-D MS-60 Details/cleaned.
Lot Title: 1859-D MS-60 Details/cleaned.
Description: Dahlonega struck its last coins in 1859, and the quarter-eagle is rare in any grade, with few survivors extant from a low emission of 2,244 pieces. This is a really well struck example which retains mint-state sharpness and exhibits attractive canary-gold patina and plenty of luster. Every single star is brought up at its center, and Liberty's hair displays considerably more detail at the center and above the ear than typically struck coins. Softness of strike is evident only at the lower borders on either side of the shield. Your fearless cataloger has attached a "cleaned" disclaimer to this coin, since the overall surface quality is a touch too reflective to pass as original, even though this coin actually was struck with some semi-prooflike character (hence the stronger-than-average strike). That being said, evidence of cleaning is not even remotely loathsome, since color has returned over the years to help overcome the unwelcome effect of hairlines in the fields. Without a doubt, this sharply detailed piece has better eye-appeal than many so-called "problem free" UNCs, and with a little luck, could see the inside of a slab some day.

This lot may contain an item not certified by ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. While Scotsman Auction Co. is typically conservative in our descriptions of items not certified by one of these companies, we cannot guarantee our grading estimation will match their grade. We highly recommend that collectors seeking items certified by a third-party grading service only bid on items that have already been certified. No lot can be returned because of a variance in judgment with regards to grade.
