Lot Title:

1793 "AMERI." In Legend (S-1, R.4). PCGS AG-3.
Description:
The reverse of a chain cent is always the stronger side, and in this case, UNITED STATES OF AMERI. is fully and easily legible, as is the denomination and the crucial chain motif. Further, the rims are nicely upset. A planchet flaw attached to the chain at 10:00 was present when the coin was struck. LIBERTY is discernible on the obverse without much trouble, while the date area is worn absolutely smooth, yet Liberty's portrait provides surprisingly decent presence - perhaps a bit ghostly in overall countenance, yet unquestionably "there". Third-party graders continue to hand out AG-3 grades to dateless coins, and certainly the smooth surfaces are pleasing enough to warrant a premium over rough examples, but most copper specialists are likely to value this at the EAC 2+ level.
