1793 Wreath "Electro" Strawberry Leaf. About Good.
Description:
If genuine, the stunning surface quality and color of this 1793 (NC-2) "strawberry leaf cent" would easily take over the runner-up spot to the finest known, and that's only because the Parmelee example recently resurfaced (and is the finest). This is all theoretical and not to be reality, however, since this is in fact only a high-quality electrotype of a genuine example, and not a genuine large-cent. The host was obviously the Dan Holmes NC-2, since every surface defect on the genuine piece matches up perfectly with this fine imitation. Interestingly, the imitation has much nicer surface and texture quality than the authentic coin, which suffers from environmental damage (it is net-graded G-4 by PCGS, incidentally). It is natural to assume that this electrotype would have been made prior to Holmes acquisition of the Levick-Crosby plate coin, and the included envelope displays some pedigree information: ex-Floyd Starr, William J Ulrich (Minneapolis 7/1961), Tony Terranova (10/1989), Ted Naftzger (9/2008). Only four examples of the famous "strawberry leaf" cent are currently known, and for those of normal financial means, this electrotype is as close to the real thing as one can hope to get.
This lot may contain an item not certified by ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. While Scotsman Auction Co. is typically conservative in our descriptions of items not certified by one of these companies, we cannot guarantee our grading estimation will match their grade. We highly recommend that collectors seeking items certified by a third-party grading service only bid on items that have already been certified. No lot can be returned because of a variance in judgment with regards to grade.
