1793 "Electrotype", "AMERI." In Legend. VG-8. 1793 "Electrotype", "AMERI." In Legend. VG-8.
Lot Title: 1793 "Electrotype", "AMERI." In Legend. VG-8.
Description: Made prior to the Hobby Protection Act (approved November 29, 1973; Pub. L. 93 - 167, 87 Stat. 686, (15 U.S.C. 2101 et seq.)), this is a high-quality electrotype of a middle grade 1793 S-1 "Ameri." chain cent, and from a visual standpoint, it is a believable copy. However, the "coin" does not stand up to a ring test, and examination of the plain edge reveals signs of tooling to disguise a seam. Surfaces reveal some porous texture, but this was probably present on the host coin, and the coloration is convincing. Were this a genuine chain cent, it might get at least an EAC 8 grade. From the Owl's Nest Collection.

This lot may contain an item not certified by ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. While Scotsman Auction Co. is typically conservative in our descriptions of items not certified by one of these companies, we cannot guarantee our grading estimation will match their grade. We highly recommend that collectors seeking items certified by a third-party grading service only bid on items that have already been certified. No lot can be returned because of a variance in judgment with regards to grade.

The reverse of a chain cent is always the stronger side, and in this case, UNITED STATES OF AMERI. is fully and easily legible, as is the denomination and the crucial chain motif. Further, the rims...

1793 "Electrotype" of S-1, "AMERI." In Legend. VG.
The Hobby Protection Act was approved November 29, 1973 (Pub. L. 93 - 167, 87 Stat. 686, (15 U.S.C. 2101 et seq.)), but because this very handsome electrotype was manufactured prior to passage, "COPY"...

1793 "AMERI." In Legend (S-1, R-4). PCGS AG-3.
Although dateless, LIBERTY is fully visible on the obverse, and the chain links are all very bold, as is usually the case even in low grades. A series of planchet fissures affect the upper left side...
