Lot Title:
1896-S AU-prooflike/cleaned.
Description:
The 1896-S Barber half is known for prooflike examples, and this near-mint survivor flashes considerable as-struck reflectivity in the fields, especially on the obverse, as well as distinct contrast on that same side. As a known scarcity in the series, it is a little surprising that price guides undervalue this issue, since nicer examples routinely sell for strong premiums. A bold strike has properly lifted up the details for all the obverse stars, and a loupe reveals extensive vertical die polish - obviously the reason for the prooflike appearance. An attractive coin with tantalizing, eye-catching appeal.
This lot may contain an item not certified by ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. While Scotsman Auction Co. is typically conservative in our descriptions of items not certified by one of these companies, we cannot guarantee our grading estimation will match their grade. We highly recommend that collectors seeking items certified by a third-party grading service only bid on items that have already been certified. No lot can be returned because of a variance in judgment with regards to grade.

Details remain very near mint-state in spite of a light touch of wear, but surfaces are a little cloudy from having been lightly cleaned. Off-white and lacking patina. |
