Lot Title:
1897-S AU/cleaned/cheek scratch.
Description:
1897-S is definitely one of the toughest Barber half-dollars to obtain in and around the AU level, and is probably the fourth most difficult key, perhaps surpassed by 1897-O, 1901-S, and 1904-S. This example features details that are exceedingly close to the uncirculated level, and in fact, it could technically be an uncirculated coin. Unfortunately, mistreatment of the surfaces by a harsh cleaning agent has literally worn down the high points, and nearly all original luster is hopelessly lost. Although some patina has been regained after lengthy album storage, the dull aluminum-grey appearance is not going to appeal to everyone.
This lot may contain an item not certified by ANACS, PCGS, or NGC. While Scotsman Auction Co. is typically conservative in our descriptions of items not certified by one of these companies, we cannot guarantee our grading estimation will match their grade. We highly recommend that collectors seeking items certified by a third-party grading service only bid on items that have already been certified. No lot can be returned because of a variance in judgment with regards to grade.

The obverse especially yields an unexpected level of prooflike character, with the fields showing obvious reflectivity despite the presence of very strong, sparkling luster. The delightful, spinning... |
